VW Camper Vans

Why are VW Camper Vans so appealing? In the last decade retro VW Campers have become all the rage and have therefore, seen a massive jump in value. Used by hippies in the 60's and 70's and surfers in the 80's and 90's these cool buses are now seeing a new lease of life. There are now many specialist companies that have sprung up to buy, sell, rent and repair them as well as many clubs and societies, not to mention 1000's of owners.

Types of VW Camper Van

There are two main models of original VW Camper Van: Bay Window and Split Screen. There are however many different sub models and the number of modifications are almost endless. The campers are available with seats, beds, kitchens and pop up or high roofs. They come with different side doors and different numbers of windows.

You can even buy modern copies with the same retro look (bay window style). These are made in Brazil but imported to USA and Europe.

Pros and Cons of Owing a VW Camper Van

The earliest buses can be more than 40 years old. Therefore, you can't expect to find all mod cons like: safety features, good brakes, power steering, economical engines etc. Electrical items such as heaters are prone to malfunction and generally you won't be able to do more than 50mph on the open road. However, the retro appeal for a van with original parts is strong and if you want to upgrade there are modern parts available to replace almost every item on board.

People do not buy a VW Camper to go fast, they are generally for cruising and touring and as long as you accept the laid back approach to a road trip you will be in your element.

I love anything relating to older VWs. Sold my '73 Super Beetle because I could only take one vehicle with me when I hit the road full time in an RV. It was in great shape, too. Always wanted a van.

Nice photos.
